There’s an awful lot of focus on retail distribution review (RDR) at the moment – seems like everywhere we turn there is someone trying to tell us how to run our business. However, can I just let all my fellow advisers know of a potential problem which may have such serious implications that would make all the business planning in the world totally irrelevant and may cause you to get to January 2013 and not be able to trade?

Retirement villages: how do you advise your clients? |

It started with a telephone call. A client rang me to say that they’d seen a retirement village and due to the fact that they were getting older and starting to think about possibly needing care and how one would cope without the other, saw this as their ideal solution.
The village was new, upmarket, with a leisure complex, restaurant and a minibus service to the local town. The price of the apartments was naturally expensive, especially with a monthly service charge of over £600 per month on top. However, it was affordable within their financial plan and due to the facilities they regarded it as a price worth paying. The sales agent was pushing them to start the ball rolling.
‘So what do you think Yvonne?’ The inevitable question.

How easy is it to take a complete break from work? |

I had the audacity to take a two week holiday in July – the first two week break since 2006.
Not only that but no calls to or from the office except for a dire emergency and no online social networking. Ann, Pav and Alyson coped admirably, my locum didn’t need a call out once.
One thing that really made me happy before departing was the fact that we told all our clients that we would be away and that the office would be fully staffed for admin and technical queries and their responses were all positive – was it that obvious that I needed a break?!
During the fortnight we were present at nine different ports throughout Europe, all of them industrial ports. Despite the slow economic growth figures and various countries throughout Europe having a debt crisis, these ports are very busy indeed. Containers being loaded and unloaded, end to end steel along the docks, and in places like Lisbon in Portugal and Cadiz in Spain there’s a lot of building work going on and very few empty shops.

How will the financial services industry restore trust amongst consumers |

Maybe it’s the warm weather but I am becoming increasingly irritated at having to sort out issues that are not of our making. I become even more irritated when I hear people in financial services saying that we have to do more to renew trust amongst consumers whilst repeatedly sticking two fingers up to it. Well I’m sorry, until you get the attention to detail and forward planning needed to make sure that the following issues (or problems) don’t arise, then that is never going to happen. I am going to run down a few brief details of various “issues” that cropped up – all during the same week – in June.
- An investment group changed the name of an OEIC (Open Ended Investment Company). This had apparently been on the cards since April but said investment group didn’t feel it necessary to advise advisers. Instead they hid behind the excuse that they told the platforms. Sadly, that’s all they are required to do.

Pensions cold call reveals dubious practises |

Over the last month, since my husband took a “cold call” from someone enquiring as to his pension plans, we have been playing along in an attempt to find out what’s going on out there in this pre-retail distribution review (RDR) financial services world and whether the RDR will actually do anything about changing what are, in my opinion, sharp practises.
The phone call came from a call centre offering the fantastic opportunity to buy agricultural land and enquired as to whether we had any old pension schemes that their IFA connections could review to establish if they were suitable to transfer into a Sipp which could then invest in this area.
